Purpose of Position

Promotes a positive and inviting environment for all Student Financial Services' customers (students, parents, colleagues, etc.) needing assistance with various aspects of the financial aid and scholarships processes. Assists with the daily operations of the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships. May be tasked with special projects as related to the operations of the entire Student Financial Services unit.

Essential Functions
  • Provides outstanding customer service, assists with outreach, recruitment, retention, financial education, and special projects as assigned; confers with individuals and groups to disseminate essential information; and conducts scholarship, financial aid, and financial education workshops at local high schools, on campus, and throughout the community as requested;
  • Reviews financial aid and scholarship awards. Processes scholarship forms and financial aid applications (FAFSA);
  • Meets with and provides accurate guidance to student applicants (and family members) and requests specific information for applications;
  • Corresponds with applicants/recipients to resolve questions regarding application and eligibility information;
  • Prepares required records and reports;
  • Composes, prepares, and proofreads confidential correspondence, reports, and other complex documents;
  • Counsels and advises students regarding their financial options and responsibilities;
  • Handles email and phone requests for scholarship and financial aid information;
  • Answers inquiries regarding awards and problems with financial aid and academic eligibility;
  • May supervise student employees in the administration of programs and gathering of information;
  • Maintains a high degree of confidentiality due to all of the sensitive information;
  • Complies with all Federal, State and University policies;
  • Provides workshops/presentations to prospective and returning students, parents, faculty and community members in a pleasant and welcoming manner; information provided must be precise and accurate;
  • Works with other UTEP staff, departments and community agencies to coordinate various events and activities;
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Detail-oriented, accurate, organized and efficient.
  • Ability to work independently, handle large volumes of work, and multi-task with frequent interruptions.
  • Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and ability to learn and use institutional, state and Federal software systems.
  • Ability to analyze issues and suggest possible alternatives and options to address issues.
  • Individual must be a self-starter, capable of establishing priorities, forward-thinking and able to work in a fast-paced environment.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Business, Public Administration, Education, Social Sciences or related field.

1-2 years of relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Bilingual in Spanish.

Two years of proven customer service experience.

1-2 years related work experience in a higher education environment.
