Specific Responsibilities and Duties:
The Senior Director of Development (SDOD) for Student Affairs is a mid-level development professional who works collaboratively with University Advancement (UA) to contribute to the development program of Student Affairs and secure significant philanthropic investments to support it. Uses advanced fundraising concepts, plans, organizes, and directs complex large-scale fundraising campaigns to include multiple components. Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met and implements program activities to achieve these goals. Conducts at least 12 documented meaningful contacts per month. Qualifies 40 new major gift prospects through personal appointments annually. Develops and manages a dynamic major gift portfolio to identify, qualify, cultivate, directly solicit and steward prospects with the capacity to make contributions of at least $25,000. Secures $2,000,000 annually in new gifts and commitments for Student Affairs. May include corporate and foundation prospects. Position is expected to raise gift dollar amounts as established at each specialization. Writes proposals for solicitation of individual, corporate, and/or foundation prospects. Work with the Vice Chancellor, Chief of Staff, Associate and Assistant Vice Chancellors, and other unit leadership to further identify, assess and prioritize funding opportunities within Student Affairs. Foster successful fundraising in the Unit by preparing the Vice Chancellor and other leaders to participate routinely and effectively in development activities and prospect appointments. May oversee work of professional and/or subordinate staff. May attend functions, meetings and serve on internal/external committees as a location representative. The primary activity of the SDOD is externally focused on securing private philanthropic support and the SDOD's effectiveness will be evaluated on the ability to achieve financial goals and meet metrics. The SDOD reports directly to the Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs. The SDOD is expected to be a highly collaborative colleague with other development officers across the campus.



Qualifications, Experience, and Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

  • Five years' successful professional development and/or fundraising-related experience, preferably in higher education, OR any equivalent combinations of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been achieved

  • Demonstrated experience in stewardship plans leading to additional investments

  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques

  • Ability to prepare complex and detailed proposals and related materials

  • Ability to make persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts

  • Advanced working knowledge of the location, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure

  • Advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.

  • Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies

  • Advanced organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/avoidance/resolution, and strong project management skills

  • Ability to work independently with both school and institutional goals in mind

  • Highly organized and the ability to handle multiple projects

  • Demonstrated skills in maintaining confidentiality

  • Ability to prepare complex and detailed proposals and related materials

  • Clarity of focus while juggling complex projects and/or deadlines

  • Ability to meet demanding work schedule expectations

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Salesforce or a comparable donor/prospect database system
