Function and Scope:

This program involves monitoring of Great Lakes coastal wetland biota, habitat, and water quality to provide information on coastal wetland condition. The project manager will oversee daily operations of a field crew collecting data on wetland birds, amphibians, plants, invertebrates, fish, and water quality at sites from the upper St. Lawrence River to Lake Ontario to eastern Lake Erie. Most activities will be conducted independently with guidance provided by the Principal Investigator as necessary. Reports to Principal Investigator.

Duties:

Oversee personnel, including assisting with crew timesheets, evaluations, and Research Foundation paperwork.
Organize and oversee crew activities, ensuring safety and quality control; manage and assist with field work, scout all sites to ensure access, including communication with private landowners' organize and manage transportation needs for crew, including travel schedule and lodging for crew, conduct basic field work training for crew and assist PIs in taxa-specific trainings as needed; drive a truck and trailer a boat; make, collect and archive data sheets; assist with field data collection.
Write and acquire permits for field work; organize and oversee data entry, analyses and quality checks for all crews; maintain budget spreadsheets; prepare reports to various stakeholders.
Oversee and organize boat maintenance, storage, winterization, and repairs of project boats
Purchase, troubleshoot, maintain, and inventory equipment and supplies for field and lab work
Manage and assist with lab work in coordination with taxa PIs.
Attend regular project meetings and yearly PI meetings
Other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

BS degree in environmental science or related field
Field experience in wetland science or related disciplines
Demonstrated ability to analyze scientific data and write scientific documents
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Experience supervising personnel
Experience with using boats such as small jon-boats or canoes
Ability to work with a culturally diverse population
Valid driver's license and ability and willingness to travel to Canada for field work

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

MS degree in environmental science or related field
Coursework in wetland ecology, multivariate analyses, technical writing, and GIS
Experience in project management and managing teams in the field
Experience trailering small boats and possession of a New York State boater's safety certificate
Experience working with a culturally diverse population

SPECIAL NOTES:

The Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Monitoring Program is funded by the EPA on five year cycles, the current cycle ends in 2025 with possible renewal for another five years. The successful candidate with be appointed through the 2024 field season with renewal contingent on job performance. Starting in fall 2024 the position will transition to half time for four months in the fall/winter, with the potential for supplemental work on other departmental research projects.

This position is a Research Foundation for The State University of New York (RF) position and is subject to The Research Foundation for SUNY policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines, and the availability of funding.(2) All finalists for this position will be subject to suitable pre-employment background investigation and may include confirmation of credentialing.
