Position Summary

The Director of University Housing for Residence Life and Educational Initiatives, a key leadership position within University Housing, is responsible for building an inclusive community in which students interact respectfully and positively as part of an enriching educational experience. The Director supports the learning of undergraduate and graduate students, partners closely with colleagues across campus in meeting the needs of students and the goals of the University. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Services and Enrollment Management and Director of University Housing, the Director will join a collaborative team dedicated to students and their success.

The Director oversees the following:
  • Management of the day-to-day residence life and educational initiatives operations of the residence halls, family housing, and university apartments, development and implementation of University Housing Academic Initiatives, the Residential Curriculum, residential operations, systems and services, University Housing Officer of Administration staff training and development, co-leading incident preparedness, planning and management, oversight of the University Housing Promotions and Recruitment unit and may serve as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator.
  • The Residence Life Leadership Team to cultivate strategic relationships with academic partners including but not limited to Undergraduate Education and Student Success, Student Life, Robert D. Clark Honors College, UO Libraries, and specific academic departments, colleges, and research centers in developing and implementing academic initiatives in the residential communities.
  • The University Housing Promotions and Recruitment unit, which works very closely and collaboratively with Admissions, Marketing, and Communications and works towards implementing strategies for exceeding institutional recruitment and enrollment goals.
  • Implementation and oversight of assessment instruments to evaluate the efficacy of academic residential programs and living-learning communities, in robust collaboration with its academic partners.

    Additionally, the Director partners with many departments to create, support, and achieve successful living-learning communities, and to expand the learning outcomes and co-curricular academic initiatives throughout the residential community system. Ultimately, the living-learning communities of University Housing aspire to broaden first-year and returning students' vision of what it means to be a "learner" at a liberal arts academy and research institution; deepen students' understanding of how knowledge is created and disseminated; and integrate their residential and academic lives.

    The Director effectively partners with all Housing units to accomplish the strategic plan of University Housing. A principal pedagogical objective of the Director is to expand the academic enterprise beyond the walls of the classroom and foster out-of-class interaction between students, staff, and faculty so that learning and academics become an integral and essential part of the residential experience.

    This position has reporting obligations under Title IX and the Clery Act. This position has been identified as being a Designated Reporter under Title IX and a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act, and as such, must adhere to Title IX "responsible employee" definition, obligations, and training and Clery Act required reporting responsibilities and CSA training.

    This position reports to the Associate Vice President, Student Services and Enrollment Management, Director for University Housing.

    Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in Student Affairs, higher education, a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible experience in residence life/housing, student life/affairs, or related field.

  • Experience with and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment.
  • Excellent organizational, administrative and management skills, including budget management, prioritization of duties, excellent judgement, flexibility, and customer service.
  • Effective communication skills, including in writing, interpersonally, organizationally, interculturally, one-on-one, and in small and large groups.
  • Ability to appropriately manage conflicts, crisis and emergency situations.
  • Ability to successfully cultivate relationships and expertise in creating collaborative partnerships with staff, faculty, students, parents, and with numerous university stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to be innovative and creative in shaping programs and services and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Knowledge of student and leadership development theory, social justice, and diversity and their application in a residential environment, including the ability to work with a wide variety of people while recognizing the needs of underrepresented groups.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with student conduct, Title IX work, emergency, and crisis response and management.
  • Experience hiring, training, mentoring, motivating, and supervising a diverse staff.
  • Experience with promotions, prospective student recruitment, marketing, communications, or related
  • Experience with and knowledge about learning communities and academic residential initiatives at a college or university.
  • Experience with analyzing and resolving conflict, team building, group dynamics, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong record of administration, including experience in program development and assessment and strategic planning; proficiency with organizational development and managing organizational change.
  • Ph.D./Ed.D. or other related terminal degree
