Job Summary: This professional part-time International Student Advisor works cooperatively with ISS staff to advise non-immigrant international students. This involves processing international admissions applications and preparing acceptance documents; continued foreign student advising during program of study, checking and verifying immigration compliance, and government reporting.They will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) as defined by USCIS/ICE.The part-time advisor must demonstrate the potential to gain familiarity with international enrollment management, USCIS regulations and Salt Lake Community College policies and must have strong social skills; must be able to meet people easily and adjust quickly to varying situations.They will serve as the point of contact for international students, communicating and acting as the liaison with sponsoring agencies and various on-campus units whose cooperation is necessary to support sponsored and international students.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties: In a timely manner:
  1. Ensure smooth and timely completion of international student admission applications to SLCC.
  2. Serve as the primary point of contact for international students and assist them with their first semester course registration and other general support.
  3. Facilitate communication among sponsors, students, advisors, SEVIS, and the ISS Director. Assist when an action or reporting is needed.
  4. Plan and deliver workshops/orientations that target the needs of international students in order to ensure that international students remain in compliance with on-campus, USCIS and sponsor requirements.
  5. Assist with retention efforts for international students at SLCC by making referrals to campus and community resources.
  6. Assist in continued student advising and immigration compliance.
  7. Assist in government verification and reporting processes.
  8. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree required. Emphasis in international/global studies, business, communications, journalism, student affairs, education, public policy, TESOL, counseling, psychology, human development, or closely related fields.
  • Two years full-time, paid related work experience required. (Part-Time, related work experience may be substituted for full-time work experience. Two years related education is equal to one year of the required work experience).
  • Experience working with people born outside the US.
  • Special Requirement: Must be authorized to work within the U.S. to meet federal regulatory requirements to operate SEVIS system as required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Department of Homeland Security.


Preferred Qualifications: Experience in higher education.Experience with F, M and other visa types and SEVIS system.Experience with Section 8 CFR.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Work with international clients and non-native speakers of English. Understand, explain and apply complex laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing International Student Services. Educational language proficiency tests and placement interpretation (e.g. CASAS, LOEP, TOEFL, Accuplacer). Ability to: Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs and concerns of diverse college populations. Conduct follow-up and maintain data to track students progress. Organize, retrieve, manage and present large amounts of informational details about international student requirements. Prioritize assignments and carry projects to completion. Lead discussions and make presentations to large and small groups. Demonstrate initiative, creativity, team work, conflict resolution/decision making skills. Work well under pressure; learn quickly. Maintain a flexible schedule with some evening shifts required and possible campus reassignment. Utilize a variety of computer software, including college data systems and internet. Work ethically with confidential information Advocate for all students Communicate effectively and respond compassionately with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities and special needs.
