Academic Advisor/Student Success Specialist

The Advisor/Student Success Specialist supports online learners as well as integrating and fostering an online environment. Contributes to formulated communication strategies, to engage with students and build institutional affinity, and programming initiatives to support student retention. The incumbent serves as an Academic Advisor to this population from acceptance to degree completion---providing cohesive services to students, with respect to advisement, student finance, and academic support.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manages a substantial caseload of WP Online students from acceptance to graduation.
  • Meets and collaboratively engages with students to advise them on matters pertaining to academic curricula requirements and majors, and understanding online program policies and processes.
  • Facilitates academic progression toward degree completion. Responds in a timely manner to student questions. Takes an active role in resolving student concerns. As needed - specific to next steps - Acts as a liaison between students and faculty to facilitate communication and address issues as they arise.
  • Tracks students' academic progress and initiates out-reach to those in various categories of academic jeopardy/failure, responding to students' inquiries and suggesting referrals, as needed.
  • Utilizes various communication strategies within 12-month calendar year, including-but not limited to-digital brochures, web and social media presence, and text alerts to engage students and build institutional affinity.
  • Supports new students' onboarding and success services.
  • Supports student success through the participation in programs and workshops.
  • Collaborates with key departments to connect and facilitate students' matriculation as well as acclimation to WP Online policies and procedures.
  • Participates in weekly strategic meetings in-person with Associate Provost, Center for Degree Completion and Adult Learning (DCAL) members and WP Online Student Success Center team to resolve student roadblocks, promote student success, and support continual program development.
  • Assists with tracking WP Online initiatives: longitudinal tracking, outcome reporting, key performance indicators and program effectiveness. Documents results through annual and other reporting requirements.
  • Remains current with emerging trends specific to online learning and best practices.
  • Represents the office and participate in campus-wide conversations pertaining to online learning and virtual services.


Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Three years of academic advising or related student affairs experience in an education setting.


Competencies/Skills Required
  • Should be proficient in academic advising, coaching and mentoring.
  • Must be able to utilize a variety of computer software programs in order to successfully complete assigned tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communications skills.


Other Information
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, to include early morning, evenings and weekends.
