SUMMARY

The Department of Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education (KSSPE) at SUNY Brockport invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE)/Adapted Physical Education (APE). The PETE faculty at SUNY Brockport has a long-standing culture of dedication to the development of high-quality teachers, a student-centered program, a collegial atmosphere for faculty, and strong K-12 community connections. The PETE undergraduate program is robust, housing over 425 students and is one of the largest majors on campus. Many of these majors pursue our APE concentration and Combined/Accelerated Health Education and Physical Education Master's program. There are numerous opportunities for our students to work with faculty on research and professional opportunities ranging from the local to international levels, and our "PE Majors Club" is recognized as being the largest and most vibrant organization of its kind in the state. Retention in the KSSPE Department and the PETE program is outstanding. New faculty can expect to be supported and mentored through tenure and beyond. This position will begin August 2027.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential Functions:
Teaching (50%)

• Expected 3-3 course load (4-4 course load with a 1-1 course release for an active program of scholarship). For these purposes, a course refers to a 3-credit course or equivalent.
• Teaches undergraduate courses in the Physical Education Pedagogy/Adapted Physical Education program, with potential for teaching courses in the programs' graduate curriculum.
• Attends and participates in department meetings, including faculty and PETE program meetings.
• Advises undergraduate students in the PETE program.
• Effectively engages faculty, staff, and students in a collegial and collaborative manner.

Scholarship and Service (50%)
Scholarly Activity 

• Engages in discipline specific scholarly activity to produce scholarly publications and related scholarly/creative work:
• • Produce scholarly publications in peer-reviewed national or international journals, conduct professional presentations at regional and national conferences, and engages in other scholarly/creative activities.
• Maintains a line of scholarly research.

Service 

• Serves on department and university-wide committees.
• Engages in enrollment and retention initiatives.
• Attends University events.
• Provides service to the department, University, community, and profession.

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Physical Education Pedagogy, Adapted Physical Education, or related degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university. ABD (all but dissertation) hires must earn their doctoral degree within six months of appointment
• Ability to teach undergraduate and potentially graduate courses in Physical Education Pedagogy/Adapted Physical Education (e.g., Elementary/Secondary Physical Education Curriculum and Methods, Assessment in Physical Education, Adapted Physical Education Methods, Adapted Sports, and Curriculum Models in Physical Education)
• Ability to teach lecture and laboratory-based courses
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and creating environments where students from all backgrounds can thrive
• Ability to develop and maintain an active research agenda

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience teaching Physical Education in K-12 schools
• Certification in Physical Education from the state of origin
• Experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Physical Education Pedagogy and Adapted Physical Education 
• Ability to supervise students in pre-service and student teaching experiences
• Record of scholarly publications, including professional presentations
• Involvement in state and/or national professional associations
