SUMMARY
SUNY Brockport is accepting applications for a Dean of Students. The Dean of Students is a senior-level leadership position with significant responsibility for shaping the student experience and advancing institutional excellence. This role provides strategic direction, administrative oversight, and visionary leadership to enhance student life, promote wellbeing, and cultivate a safe, healthy, and inclusive campus environment. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Dean serves as a key member of the Student Affairs Divisional Leadership Team and plays a central role in supporting the University's mission of student success and holistic development.
As a senior leader, the Dean of Students oversees a wide-ranging portfolio of student services, including health and wellness, residential life, student conduct, and crisis management. The position requires a dynamic and collaborative leader who can effectively balance strategic planning with hands-on engagement to address the diverse needs of students, faculty, and staff.

JOB FUNCTIONS
Essential Functions:
Leadership and Strategic Oversight
- Provides visionary leadership and strategic direction for a comprehensive portfolio of Student Affairs units, including the Student Health Center, Counseling Services, Health Promotion & Prevention Education, Campus Recreation, Residential Life/Learning Communities, Student Conduct, Student Behavioral Intervention Services, and Off-Campus Student Services.
- Fosters collaboration with Academic Affairs and other university divisions to enhance student success, retention, and the overall campus experience.
- Contributes to divisional and university-wide strategic planning, assessment, and policy development, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and student needs.
- Leads diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all students.
- Serves as the primary point of contact for addressing student concerns, emergencies, and crisis situations, ensuring timely and effective responses.
- Collaborates with the University's Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and other stakeholders to ensure students in crisis receive appropriate support and interventions.
- Manages critical incidents involving students, including emergencies, mental health concerns, and other high-stakes situations, by coordinating responses, engaging relevant personnel, and implementing necessary measures to ensure safety and support.
- Serves as student conduct/Title IX appeal officer.
- Effectively manages and allocates resources, including budget planning, facility oversight, and staffing, to support the operations and strategic goals of Student Affairs.
- Supervises directors and staff within the Student Affairs portfolio, fostering a culture of professional growth, collaboration, and excellence.
- Ensures compliance with SUNY system policies, state regulations, and institutional standards, maintaining accountability and integrity across all operations.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates policies related to health, wellbeing, housing, student conduct, etc. to enhance the student experience and institutional effectiveness.
- Leads assessment efforts to measure the impact of Student Affairs programs and initiatives, using data to inform decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Collaborates with Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, and other divisions to support student retention, persistence, and success, fostering a seamless and supportive campus environment.
- Advocates for student needs and represent student interests on university-wide committees, task forces, and in strategic discussions.
- Serves as a trusted resource for faculty and staff, providing guidance and support on addressing student behavioral issues in academic and workplace settings.
- Builds partnerships with local communities, alumni, and external stakeholders to enhance student success and institutional goals.
- Develops and implements programs and services to support the wellbeing, safety, and success of off-campus students, fostering a sense of belonging and connection to the university community.
- Collaborates with local organizations, landlords, and community partners to address off-campus student needs and enhance their overall experience.
- Oversees student engagement initiatives, including leadership development programs, student organizations, and co-curricular activities.
- Serves on divisional and university-wide committees.
- Participates in campus events, ceremonies, and traditions to foster community engagement.
- Represents the University at external conferences, meetings, and professional associations.
- Contributes to fundraising efforts and grant applications to support student programs and initiatives.
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or a related field from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university
- Minimum of eight years of progressive leadership experience in student affairs or related areas
- Proficient in budget management and resource allocation
- Experience in crisis management, student conduct processes, and/or Title IX compliance
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Demonstrated commitment to student engagement, wellbeing, and sense of belonging
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Doctoral degree in Higher Education Administration or a related field
- Ten years of experience in higher education administration
- Knowledge of current trends and best practices in student affairs and higher education
- Experience with assessment and data-driven decision-making in student services
- Familiarity with SUNY system policies and procedures
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Work Schedule:
40 hours/week: Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm with occasional evenings and weekends
