SUMMARY

SUNY Brockport invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in the Department of African and African American Studies to begin August 1, 2026. Position has responsibility for teaching, scholarly activity, and service to the department, campus, and profession. Research specialty is open, but candidates must possess a PhD in History or Africana Studies with a concentration on the history and culture of the peoples of Africa. The chosen person must be able to teach introductory and advanced courses from an African-centered perspective, maintaining and expanding the African Studies dimension of our department. Candidates who can also teach courses on aspects of the African Diaspora, such as Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Caribbean, and/or Afro-Canadian histories are especially encouraged to apply.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Teaching (50%)

Expected 3-3 course load
Engage in experiential and hands-on education
Infuse diversity issues as appropriate
Manage student advisement and intra-campus recruitment

Scholarly Activity (40%)

Publish books or peer reviewed articles in peer-reviewed national or international journals,
Conduct professional presentations at regional and national conferences, and
Engages in other scholarly activities according to one's academic specialty

Service (10%)

Engage in enrollment and retention initiatives
Attend University events
Provide service to the department, University, community, and profession

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in History or Africana Studies with a specialization in African History from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university
Demonstrate a commitment and strong knowledge and understanding of the field of African and African American Studies (or Africana Studies)
Demonstrated commitment to diversity through teaching, scholarship, or service
Experience teaching online courses

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to teach courses and understand Africa-centered pedagogy and curricular philosophy.
Familiarity with Pan-African Political thought and praxis as well as other Africana philosophies
Experience supervising students in practicums or internships
Awareness of experiential and hands-on opportunities in the discipline
