SUMMARY
SUNY Brockport is accepting applications for a Financial Aid Advisor. Reporting to the Financial Aid Office, the Financial Aid Advisor is responsible for advising students as to the availability and types of financial aid available on a daily basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for processing all NYS Aid including, but not limited to TAP, Excelsior, Merit Scholarships. In addition, they will be responsible for packaging students for federal aid.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Essential Functions:
Responsible for accurate and timely certification of NYS Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) award programs including but not limited to: (40%)
- Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)
- Part-Time TAP (PTAP)
- Excelsior Scholarship Program
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Veteran's Tuition Awards (VTA)
- Masters-In-Education Teaching Incentive
- HESC Merit-based Scholarships
Advises students and parents as to the availability of student aid, types of student aid, processing procedures and other consumer information as it relates to student aid. (20%)
- Applies knowledge of the eligibility requirements of all aid programs, program procedures, as well as institutional procedures for aid programs.
- Assists in the development and maintenance of an effective communication plan to assist students and parents in understanding the financial aid eligibility process.
- Addresses and resolves potential problems and difficulties in processing aid.
- General Customer Contact- engages with all students/parents via phone, email or in-person.
Performs needs analysis and packaging of student aid. (20%)
- Ensures the philosophy behind needs analysis is included in decision making and financial aid packaging.
- Follows the components that comprise the federal methodology.
- Verifies data provided by students is accurate in Banner.
- Verifies that all documents in the student's file are indexed to the student's file.
- Requests clarification of discrepant data, if needed, using Policy and Procedures.
- Verifies that the financial aid package has been calculated correctly.
- Explains the financial aid package to students/parents including the types of aid programs and amounts.
- Repackaging for various reasons including, but not limited to over awards, registration discrepancies, receipt of updated information etc.
Provides support to staff and students in the proper processing and awarding and coordination of the various programs. (10%)
- Provides accurate and timely communication to Financial Aid Office staff.
- Maintains accurate processing procedures.
- Attends informational meetings, workshops and other professional development activities.
Supports admissions and retention activities as they relate to student aid (i.e., high school presentations, Open Houses, and other presentations as needed). (10%)
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree by time of appointment from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university
- Experience working in a customer service environment
- Ability to work effectively with students, public, college community and external constituencies, with an appreciation for cultural and group differences
- Experience working in a higher education setting
- Experience working with document imaging systems
- Demonstrated high-level experience with software/database and computerized financial systems
- Experience working in a Financial Aid Office
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Work Schedule:
37.5 hours/week: Monday-Friday, 8 am-4 pm.
