SUMMARY
SUNY Brockport is accepting applications for a Technical Director. The Technical Director oversees all technical aspects of productions, performances, concerts, and other Fine Arts Series events, ensuring they are executed safely, efficiently, and to professional standards. This role supports the department's educational mission by teaching Stagecraft and related practicums, mentoring students in technical theatre practices, and fostering a collaborative, hands-on learning environment. The successful candidate will be a vital partner in building the next generation of our program as well as an open and collaborative individual positively engaged in the department's mission and values.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Essential Functions:
- Bids, orders, purchases and secures materials, supplies, equipment, and parts for the theater and theatre productions. Also responsible for aquiring scenic elements and props for productions.
- Provides audio and lighting support for the Fine Arts Series, and departmental concerts, guest artists, music performances and other events using our spaces (such as mainstage and blackbox).
- Advises designers on structural, budgetary, technical, and scheduling feasibility of received scenic, property, lighting, and sound designs so they may adjust designs before execution.
- Plans and creates the work schedule (production timeline) for the department's technical needs. And maintains, tracks, and reports as requested on assigned budgets.
- Instructs Stagecraft course and supervises assigned practicums each semester with the understanding that students enrolled in these courses are participaing in the build and execution of scenic and property elements of the season productions.
- Instructs students on the safe and proper use of shop equipment and theatre production techniques in preparation, build and running of productions. This includes students from the following: Stagecraft, practicums, Theatre Arts, and work study.
- Attends technichal rehearsals in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the show. Is present or on site, (or arranges for another faculty or staff person) for all Theatre and Music Studies and Fine Arts Series Events in the theatre and music spaces, and other performances/events as necessary. This is arranged with the producer and/or chair.
- Consults with the producer and chair on long-term capital improvements or modification of a theatre's structure, space or operating systems.
- Attends faculty meetings, production meetings and other department related events.
- Serves on campus committees as needed.
- Maintains capital improvement and equipment inventory replacement/repair reports in consultation with producer and chair.
- Participates in continuous maintenance, cleaning, and updating of work and storage spaces in the building.
- Collaborates with all members of the department, according to the department Code of Professional Interaction.
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of education or an internationally recognized college or university
- Minimum of three years of experience working in theater or related field
- Proficient in CAD, Vectorworks, or industry standard software and demonstrated ability to read and interpret theatrical drafting
- Knowledge of chemical hygiene practices and first aid
- Ability to access and conform to local, state, and federal building safety and fire codes
- Must be collaborative, detailed oriented; possess strong organizational, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
- This position is expected to operate a box truck. A valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated is required and candidate will need to pass a LENS Check. If selected for hire and you do not possess a New York State driver's license, you must get a New York State driver's license within 30 days of hire.
- Understanding of the related production design areas: projection design, costume design, lighting design, and sound design including knowledge of audio production and audio reinforcement
- Knowledge of welding and proper use of metal working tools
- Experience teaching, supervising, and mentoring students in practicums or internships
- Must be able to work on ladders and climb scaffolding to heights in excess of 15 feet
- Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, walk, reach, stand, and work in cramped areas for extended periods of time
- Must be able to frequently lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to perform tasks requiring exposure to dust, heights, moving parts, and noise
- Must be able to use standard tools and equipment for scenic construction
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Work Schedule:
37.5 hours/week: Monday-Friday, 8 am-4 pm, some nights and weekends
