SUMMARY

Drake Memorial Library is seeking a Library Assistant 1 for the closing shift at the circulation desk. The Library Assistant 1 will close the library Sunday-Thursday and work with colleagues and student employees to provide excellent customer service and resolve problems for library patrons at our main service point. They will work with colleagues to hire, train, schedule, and supervise the student workers at our circulation desk. They will assist with a variety of collection tasks including reshelving, stacks maintenance, managing the collection of anatomy models, processing lost and overdue items, and assisting with interlibrary loan request processing. The Library Assistant 1 will also serve as one of the library's building managers and will be responsible for communicating with facilities staff and submitting service requests.

The Library Assistant 1 will support a collegial and inclusive work environment in order to promote the success of all Brockport students, faculty, and staff.

JOB FUNCTIONS


  • In collaboration with other library staff, supervise, hire, schedule, and train library student employees
  • Provide excellent customer service at the circulation desk, by phone, and through digital services by assisting patrons, resolving problems, and referring patrons to other library staff and services as necessary
    1. Check out and return circulating library items
    2. Assist patrons in reserving rooms within the library
    3. Manage and update patron accounts
    4. Process lost and overdue items
    5. Look up library material in catalog.
    6. Assist with basic technology questions related to printers, scanning, copying, and faxing.
  • Support collection management by reshelving items, working on stacks maintenance projects, managing the collection of anatomy models, and performing other collections-related tasks
  • Close the library each evening
  • Serve as a building manager


REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a noncompetitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (NY HELPS):

Either 1. graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma;

AND

one year of full-time clerical experience in a library setting.*

*Examples of qualifying clerical duties in a library setting may include:
  • Maintaining circulation record;
  • Processing acquisitions including the receipt and recording of courier-delivered materials and organizing new items;
  • Creating and processing interlibrary loan requests (ILL);
  • Assisting in collection maintenance including; weeding, shifting, re-shelving, repairing, straightening, inventory, supply orders, and emptying book drop containers to be checked in;
  • Assisting and educating patrons in searching the library catalog;
  • Assisting patrons in the use of library equipment.

Or 2. thirty semester credit hours of college study including at least NINE semester credit hours of college study in any combination of the following areas:
  • Library/Information Science;
  • Computer Applications
  • Information Studies.


COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (NON-NY HELPS):
Candidates must have permanent appointment in a Library Assistant 1 NY State classified position, or be in a transferrable title, or be reachable for appointment on the current NY State Civil Service eligible list for Library Assistant 1 Full-Time, Brockport location.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working in a library
  • Ability to work and complete projects independently
  • Previous experience training others in work responsibilities and functions


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Work Schedule:

40 hours/week: Sunday 12pm-8pm and Monday-Thursday 3pm-11pm. Hours will vary during university breaks and switch to Monday-Friday 8am-4pm when the library is not open on weekends
