Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Student Engagement & Support, the Assistant/Associate Director of Student Engagement & Support delivers Student & Campus Life programs and services for students at the Cornish College of the Arts at Seattle University on our South Lake Union campus. The Assistant/Associate Director promotes learning and engagement outside of the classroom through outstanding programs and services designed to meet the needs of students on the CCA campus.
The Assistant/Associate Director contributes to student safety, wellness, and retention by providing direct support to students who need assistance accessing resources related to mental health, physical health, basic needs, academic support, financial concerns, relationship concerns, and other possible barriers to their success. The Assistant/Associate Director collaborates with Student & Campus Life departments and other university teams, especially the Center for Student Involvement, the Office of the Dean of Students, the MOSAIC Center, Housing & Residence Life, University Recreation, Counseling, Health, & Wellness Services, the Center for Community Engagement, Campus Ministry, and others to provide engagement opportunities for students located on the South Lake Union campus while encouraging CCA at SU students to engage with programs and services on our main Capitol Hill campus.
This position requires creativity, flexibility, and experience managing sensitive and confidential information with a trauma-informed, timely, empathetic, and collaborative approach. This position also requires culturally competent interpersonal communication skills, de-escalation skills, and the ability to recognize and prioritize situations requiring immediate attention. This position is 12 months, full-time, and fully on-site at the South Lake Union campus, with in person responsibilities on our Capitol Hill campus several times per month. Job title and salary are dependent upon the successful candidate's skills and experience.
Essential Functions
Engagement & Programming (40%)
- In collaboration with Student & Campus Life staff and other university colleagues, develop programs and services that identify and address the specific needs of students located at CCA at SU on our South Lake Union Campus.
- Plan, promote, deliver, and assess regular programs and events for students that create a sense of community and belonging. Support programming developed by other Student & Campus Life offices for the CCA campus.
- Serve as a campus contact for Capstone (housing), Resident Assistants, and other student leaders and employees. Supervise student employees as directed.
- Advise student clubs and organizations in partnership with the Director of the Center for Student Involvement.
- Support intentional programming to support the specific needs of underrepresented and systematically marginalized student populations, in partnership with the Director of the MOSAIC Center.
- Support with other programming initiatives as requested by supervisor.
Non-Clinical Case Management & Student Support (30%)
- Manage a CARE Team caseload at the direction of the Assistant Dean of Students for Care & Support.
- Meet with students to determine needs, assess risk, develop action plans, refer to resources, and follow up at regular intervals to track progress.
- Refer students to various support resources such as basic needs programs, the SU Food Pantry, counseling services, health services, advising, and other on- and off-campus resources.
- Provide appropriate interventions for students in crisis, including on- and off-campus emergency services when there are concerns about possible imminent harm.
- Facilitate communication and the exchange of information between various student-facing departments, including the Office of the Dean of Students, Student Persistence Programs, Advising, Public Safety, Housing & Residence Life, Capstone, Disability Services, Student Support Center, Integrity Formation, Wellness & Health Promotion, Athletics, academic departments, and others.
- Consult with faculty, staff, students, parents/families, and others about how to respond to various student concerns.
- Use Slate for Student Success to alert appropriate faculty and staff about students at risk of attrition or those who may require additional support.
- Follow emergency procedures and notify the Department of Public Safety & the Office of the Dean of Students when encountering a student in crisis or in need of immediate assistance.
- As directed by the Associate Dean of Students & Director of Integrity Formation, meet with students in Integrity Formation (student conduct) meetings to help students to reflect about their values and decisions, determine findings of responsibility, and assign appropriate developmental sanctions in response to alleged violations of the Code of Student Conduct.
Supervision & Administrative Duties (20%)
- Supervise, train, develop, and evaluate a full-time Program Coordinator for Student & Campus Life on the CCA at SU campus in accordance with Seattle University's human resources policies.
- Hire, supervise, train, develop and evaluate student leaders and employees as directed and in accordance with Seattle University's student employment policies.
- Create, maintain, and update case notes related to encounters with students of concern in Maxient and Slate for Student Success.
- Create reports and presentations to share data about student engagement on the CCA at SU campus. Partner with university departments to administer various student surveys.
- Ensure that events, programs, and club/organization information is updated on websites and in the student engagement platform. Monitor advertising to ensure compliance with Seattle University policies.
- Monitor and respond to email and Teams communications. Respond to communications within a reasonable timeframe. Manage schedule and calendar and take steps to ensure that weekly work hours do not exceed 37.5 hours per week except if there has been advanced approval by the AVP & Dean of Students.
- May monitor one or more operating budgets at the direction of the Assistant Vice President or the Associate Vice Provost & Dean of Students.
- Ensure that any funds collected for programs and events are properly accounted for and managed in accordance with university policies.
Other Duties (10%)
- Serve on Student & Campus Life team and university committees and working groups as assigned. Meet with university colleagues for collaboration and consultation as needed and directed.
- Attend Student & Campus Life and other university programs and events, including annual Student & Campus Life welcome event, quarterly in services, high profile student programs and events, major staff development programs, commencement activities, end of year celebrations, and others.
- Attend programs and events and maintain high visibility on the CCA at SU campus.
- Attend various meetings in the director's absence as assigned, such as the Student & Campus Life Director's Leadership Team (DLT) meetings.
- Meet regularly with supervisor.
- Other and/or revised duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in education, psychology, social work or a related field and 3 or more years of professional experience in a higher education setting.
- Experience working with diverse student populations and a commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Seattle University.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A master's degree in student affairs, higher education leadership, psychology, social work or a related field and 3 or more years of post-graduate degree professional experience in a higher education setting.
Knowledge:
- Professional experience in student development; higher education; student case management in college settings; student conduct; wellness programs; Title IX; crisis management; residence life; and/or student retention and success.
- Knowledge of culturally informed approaches to student support.
- Professional experience with assessment and program evaluation.
- Knowledge of Jesuit Catholic education.
Abilities and Skills:
- Ability to work with diverse populations, ability to manage difficult situations that are emotionally charged, and to manage crisis.
- Ability to work independently with consultation as needed, teaching and coaching skills, strong interpersonal,
- and analytic abilities.
Ability to explain complex information and processes in a succinct way. - Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as experience presenting or ability to present training and informational material to students, faculty, staff, administrators, board members, parents/families, and others.

Compensation at a Glance
Salary Range: $33 - $36 per hour
Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate's gender or any other protected status.
