Student Success Coach (Interns - Counseling)

SALARY: $3,000 - $7,000

Interested individuals currently enrolled in a Master's Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), or Social Work from an accredited institution are invited to apply for the position of Student Success Coach. The Student Success Coach is an integral part of the Student Services Division, such as: First Year Experience Program, Career Center, Transfer Center, Destino Center, Completion Counseling, etc. This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals interested in becoming community college counselors in the future. SALARY: $3,000.00 Fall, $3000.00 Spring, $1000.00 Summer for a total of $7,000.00 Annually


  • Responsible for helping students to practice and apply the skills of academic responsibility.
  • Responsible for working collaboratively with the Matriculation Coordinator and Student Services
  • Leads such as: First Year Experience Program, Career Center, Transfer Center, Destino Center,
  • Completion Counseling, etc.
  • Responsible for helping students manage and synthesize aspects of their learning experience and to document progress at Long Beach City College.
  • Responsible for creating, leading workshops, and classroom presentations.
  • Responsible for attending comprehensive training and professional development throughout the semester.
  • Responsible for leading discussions with students based on predetermined topics and for providing referrals to appropriate programs and services based on student needs. Responsible for planning and attending regularly scheduled meetings with assigned students and for providing same-day documentation of the meetings.
  • Leverage technology to manage a caseload of students to improve outcomes; this includes assisting students with matriculation steps, supporting matriculation events, registration assistance, First Year Experience Program support, Career Center support, Transfer Center support, Destino Center support and Completion counseling support. In addition, verifying completion of all eligibility requirements for the First Year Experience Program which includes Viking Advantage, Long Beach
    College Promise and Promise 2.0
  • Manage a caseload of students affiliated with specific programs to provide support and referral assistance to the appropriate resource centers.
    Responsible for assisting with special projects as assigned by the Matriculation Coordinator, First-Year Program Manager and Student Services Leads. This includes supporting events from the office of Student Equity, chaperoning transfer tours, registration assistance labs, summer bridge programming, etc.
  • Participate in weekly professional development and meetings to discuss student needs and target students.
  • Responsible for creating marketing collateral and how-to guides for students.


  • Attend an accredited four (4) year college or university.
  • Enrolled in a Master's counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, Marriage and
  • Family Therapist (MFT), or Social Work.
  • Must be entering the first or second year of a two-year counseling program, or the second or third year of a 3-year counseling program.
  • Enrolled full-time in a graduate level program.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Evidence of demonstrated cultural competency and enthusiasm in serving the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender identity, sexual orientation, racial, and cultural backgrounds of community college student populations, including students with differing abilities (physical and/or learning), as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices within the classroom.

  • Desire to become a community college counselor.
  • Demonstrated success throughout college career.
  • Previous attendance at a community college.
  • A broad perspective of the college; understands the diversity of students, programs, and faculty on both campuses.
  • Experience in planning and coordinating activities to reach a goal.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Good organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to plan and follow through on projects. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable with remote supervision.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Suite and capable of learning other technology related to student supports.


  • Coaches will receive a stipend of $3,000 per primary term and $1,000 for the summer intersession.
  • Lead Coaches may be identified from the pool of Student Success Coaches and will receive an additional $1000 per primary term and $500 for summer intersession.
  • Stipend payments occur monthly dependent on the start date.
  • Coaches are required to work 12 hours per week throughout the Fall and Spring semesters and Summer intersession. This includes 10 hours of case management/projects, 1 hour of professional development, and 1 hour of counselor training.
  • Coaches are selected to serve up to 2 academic years. Each semester coaches will receive a performance evaluation to determine whether they will continue to the next term.
    Coaches receive a semester parking permit at no cost and may be assigned to either campus.
    Coaches are expected to support students on both Long Beach City College campuses which may require travel.
