Position Description


The purpose of this job is to build vibrant, living-learning communities in the residence halls through the leadership, management, and implementation of administrative, programmatic and student development best practices for Residencial Life. This includes overseeing the daily operations of the residence halls while also having on call campus responsibilities and being an active participant in the campus community.


This position is responsible for providing a positive residential experience for our resident students; ensuring that the residence halls run efficiently by conducting new and returning room selection; assisting with the selection and training of paraprofessional staff; conducting the resident student complaint resolution process; serving as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator for students; retaining current and recruiting new residents; assisting with crisis situations; conducting assessment and maintaining data necessary for federally mandated reports and for internal operational needs, such as Fontbonne University housing trends. Fontbonne recruits and enrolls a diverse student body. The Director of Housing Operations will lead a team that embraces student diversity and promotes belonging and engagement for all students.


This position is formally responsible for providing input into policies associated with the job's purpose and responsibilities. Routine decisions include policy/procedural reviews as they pertain to the residential life programs and budget allocations for the daily operations of the department.


This role is a 12-month, full-time, live-off position and reports to the Dean of Students.


Education – Required



  • Master's degree required. Master's degree in Counseling, College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration or related area preferred.

Duties & Responsibilities



  • Supervise one full-time professional area coordinator; assist in the hiring and training of the residential assistants and student desk workers

  • Assist with retention of resident students; serve on the Behavior Intervention Team (BIT)

  • Oversight of complaint resolution process for residential life; serves as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Students

  • Manage and participate in daily operation of residence halls; room assignment for new and returning students; check-in and check-out; room and damage billing.

  • Manage all aspects of housing facilities including keys, card access systems, work order processing, etc.

  • Maintain department program assessment and residential policy/procedure reviews.

  • Maintain data necessary for federally mandated reports and for internal operational needs such as University housing trends, occupancy reports and residential life satisfaction.

  • Budget oversight in areas of supervision

  • Oversight for summer conference housing

  • Assist with crisis intervention and participate in on-call duty rotation for nights and weekends

  • Collaboration with other departments to maintain a positive quality of life for the campus resident population

  • Providing input and collaboration on capital expenditures for renovations

  • Other duties as assigned and appropriate for building a successful Residence Life program



Experience, Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities



  • Three to five years' experience in residence life at post-graduate level required

  • Experience creating safe environments and promoting inclusion and belonging for a diverse student body

  • Working knowledge of student developmental theory

  • Working knowledge of housing operations and room selection processes

  • Knowledge on how the law impacts higher education

  • Working knowledge of student conduct and title IX processes; mediation skills

  • Verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to provide effective supervision; leadership and management skills

  • Ability to effectively work with diverse groups of individuals, including students, faculty, staff and parents

  • Interpersonal skills; teamwork and collaborator
