Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree
Seven years of progressive full-time experience in higher education
Experience supervising full-time staff
Experience with crisis management and student counseling or advisement

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

University Housing is seeking a dynamic, collaborative, and talented Associate Director that will foster an environment in Residence Life by promoting the departmental core values: caring, inclusiveness, learning, innovation, dedication, and integrity. The Associate Director provides leadership, fiscal management, strategic direction, and assessment for a comprehensive Residence Life program that serves the educational and personal needs of 6,150 students in 18 residence halls. The Associate Director is responsible for providing oversight in the following major areas: staff recruitment, selection, training, supervision and evaluation; residential programming, residential learning communities, faculty-in-residence, and other learning focused initiatives; care and crisis management; emergency response protocols; policy development and implementation; student leadership; student and staff development; and recognition. The Associate Director hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates three Assistant Directors of Residence Life and one Administrative personnel. The position indirectly supervises nine live-in Coordinators, two full-time Service Desk Supervisors, 14 Graduate Assistants, ~150 Resident Assistants, 20 Desk Assistants, and other support staff.

The Associate Director of Residence Life understands the complexity of a large housing operation with ~100 full-time staff. The Associate Director balances the needs in residence life with the other areas of the department including: maintenance, support services, housekeeping, fiscal management, assessment, housing assignments, technology, communications/marketing, summer camps and conferences, and capital projects. The position works directly with students and staff at all levels in each area. The Associate Director is responsible for engaging with students and staff members in their respective spaces, working outside of the main office to build relationships and partnerships.

The Associate Director is responsible for providing leadership and support in the following areas:

Working with Staff

Conduct weekly one-on-one supervision meetings with the three Assistant Directors.
Build strong and effective working relationships with Coordinators, Service Desk Supervisors, Graduate Assistants, and other student staff where appropriate.
Meet regularly with staff in the other areas of Housing.
Coordinate all professional and graduate staff meetings that educate, train, challenge, and support staff.
Plan and provide oversight for regular professional development activities for staff.
Assist professional staff in the development and implementation of professional development plans.
Provide oversight for the recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of staff.
Facilitate and foster an environment promoting the departmental core values: caring, inclusiveness, learning, innovation, dedication, and integrity.

Working with Students, Parents/Guardians, and Families:

Maintain a high level of student contact and availability.
Develop or expand initiatives that invite student involvement and participation in decision making.
Serve as an information resource concerning Residence Life and the University.
Provide referrals for students, parents/guardians, and families with various personal and professional questions, concerns, or issues.
Provide oversight and promote leadership development opportunities for students.
Meet with student leaders on a monthly basis.

Administrative, Personnel, and Business Functions:

Provide leadership and evaluation of the strategic plan and goals for Residence Life.
Serves as the fiscal manager of the Residence Life budget ($2.3 million), overseeing all expenses for staffing, programming, travel, payroll, etc.
Engage with students, faculty, staff, and university constituents with varying backgrounds, perspectives, education, and skill sets.
Connect and meet with students, parents/guardians, and families.
Coordinate assessments, working closely with the Director of Student Affairs Assessment.
Develop and refine administrative policies and procedures in Residence Life.
Oversee work groups, task forces, and collateral assignments for Residence Life.
Build collaborative partnerships with University departments and the community.
Prepare and generate reports and summary documents for university constituents and Director.
Communicate the function of Residence Life to the University and other constituencies.
Stay abreast of trends in Housing/Residence Life, Higher Education, and Student Affairs through membership in professional associations and conference attendance.

Care and Crisis Response Functions:

Oversee, monitor, and evaluate the crisis response system, including Resident Assistants, Graduate Assistants, Coordinators, and Leadership on-call levels.
Serve as the departmental liaison between the Office of the Dean of Students, University Police, Counseling & Psychological Services, and the Office of Access & Equity.
Work with Assistant Directors to read, respond to, and process incident reports in Maxient.
Prepare and update on a frequent basis the Crisis Management Manual.
Manage updating and replacement of on-call phones.
Share and update the on-call contact list and memo.
Follow up with students and staff related to on-call incident reports.
Participate on University Teams and committees related to student care and concern.
Serve on the Housing Leadership On-call rotation with the Director, two other Associate Directors, and three Assistant Directors in Residence Life.
