Min T/E Requirements:
A Masters Degree is preferred in Student Development, Higher Education Administration or other related disciplines from an accredited college or university required. Two (2) years of experience in a college or university setting; demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with college students; and excellent communication and project management experience. Candidates must demonstrate evidence of knowledge, understanding and experiences of personal involvement with community engagement and public service. Candidates must have the ability to work well with a diverse university student population and minority community organizations.

The UNC Pembroke Office for Community and Civic Engagement will provide meaningful co- and extra-curricular developmental and educational opportunities for students to recognize their civic potential and challenge students to enrich and enhance their education experience to become responsible citizens through active, engaged service as outlined by the Universitys mission.

Primary Purpose of Position:
The Assistant Director for Student Engagement position supports the University mission and Office for Community and Civic Engagement by developing and implementing programs and initiatives that support student citizenship development through democratic and community engagement and volunteer service.

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke seeks a dynamic student affairs professional for the position of Assistant Director for Student Engagement. The position is a full-time 12-month ERHA position within the Division of Student Affairs and reports to the Director of the Office for Community & Civic Engagement. The primary purpose of this position is to develop student citizenship through civic and community engagement.

The Assistant Director for Student Engagement will be responsible for:
  • developing and maintaining relationships with university stakeholders that enhance student success,
  • planning, developing and implementing service programs, educational activities and events that embody volunteerism, public service and responsible citizenship,
  • providing guidance for student engagement model,
  • evaluating and assessing program effectiveness for enhancing student retention and persistence in service involvement,
  • providing oversight for UNCP voter education and mobilization efforts;
  • advising students on community service, civic responsibility, and civic engagement,
  • coordinate and lead FLEDGE, a first year service learning community, and
  • maintenance of student co-curricular service transcripts via UNCP Serve

    The Assistant Director has shared responsibility for:
  • creating a robust campus environment by developing, managing, and coordinating experiences to engage students in special events
  • supporting major programs and initiatives like Change Agent Academy, Hawk Camp, Days of Service, CARE Resource Center, Brave Foundations mentoring program, and more.
  • strengthening a comprehensive community and civic engagement program that supports service-learning, citizenship development, community awareness, and civic education of engaged students by implementing the office's citizenship curriculum,
  • supporting the initiatives and experiences of the Student Service Leaders, and
  • marketing and social media
  • assessing and evaluating programs affiliated with office.

    Professional development is encourage and funded. Work also includes other duties as assigned by the Director. Occasional late night and weekend work is required.

    Anticipated start date is July 1, 2021.


    Management Preference:
    Candidate should have experience supervising students.
