SUMMARY


Performs semiskilled maintenance, installation, repair, and troubleshooting of building systems, equipment, and facilities across the mechanical, plumbing, electrical, HVAC/R, building construction, and motor equipment trades. Works both independently and in collaboration with skilled trades personnel, including electricians, plumber/steamfitters, and trades generalists, to complete preventive and corrective maintenance, repairs, and facility improvement projects. Performs routine tasks with considerable independence and assists with journey-level work under supervision or detailed instruction to develop and refine trade skills. Identifies, handles, removes, transports, and disposes of hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead-based paint, waste oil, fuel, refrigerants, and solvents. Responds to routine and emergency work orders, works in confined spaces using required personal protective equipment, and supports safe and efficient facility operations.

JOB FUNCTIONS


Essential Functions:
  • Performs maintenance, repair, installation, and troubleshooting of plumbing, steam fitting, electrical, HVAC/R, mechanical, structural, life safety systems and equipment
  • Completes corrective maintenance actions and identifies, documents, and reports facility deficiencies requiring specialized trade support
  • Responds to routine and emergency work orders, including scheduled and unscheduled overtime assignments
  • Assists skilled trades personnel with maintenance, repair, and construction projects as needed
  • Reviews, updates, and documents work activities through the Footprints work order management system
  • Performs snow removal and other facility support duties as assigned
  • Safely handles hazardous materials, including asbestos, refrigerants, fuel oil, gas, and solvents, in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures
  • Works in confined spaces and utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure a safe work environment


Job Requirements:
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade or trades to which assigned.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations for the trade or trades to which assigned.
  • Ability to read plans, specifications, manuals, and blueprints.
  • Perform moderate to heavy manual labor.
  • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Supervise others.
  • Climb ladders and work at heights on scaffolds, bucket trucks, and aerial platforms.


Operating Needs
  • Ability to work holidays, scheduled/unscheduled overtime, shift work and college special events.
  • Has the capacity to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to alternate in different areas as needed.
  • Possesses a valid NYS C Driver License or above and pass NYS LENS check.
  • Must be able to obtain Operations and Maintenance certification for asbestos removal.


REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Non-competitive: Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*.

    *Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Technical training/education in related skills (electrical, plumbing)
  • Skilled in one or more trades.
  • Demonstrates computer literacy.
  • Willingness to learn new skills.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Work Schedule:

40 hours/week: Monday - Friday 7:00am-3:30pm.
