SUMMARY

SUNY Brockport is accepting applications for a Scene Shop Manager. The Scene Shop Manager assists Design and Technology faculty and staff in the production of four shows a year, including one musical. Reporting to the Technical Director and Scenic Designer, this role is responsible for maintaining a clean, efficient, and safe scene and paint shop. This position is divided into three areas of responsibility, which include serving as Props Coordinator, supporting the Scenic Charge in the paint area, and assisting the Technical Director with scenery construction. This role directly supports our educational mission by helping supervise student training and education, preparing students to enter the theatre profession.

JOB FUNCTIONS


Essential Functions:
  • Works with Technical Director and Scenic Designer in supporting the training and supervision of students in scenic construction classes. In addition, will supervise work study students and volunteers.
  • Assists Scenic Charge in supervision of paint studio students when the Scenic Charge is in class or occupied. Will also support the acquisition of paint and painting related products.
  • Confers with the Technical Director regarding the assignment of scenery construction projects for students, and the scheduling of activities related to projects and general production needs.
  • Understands and can teach standard scenery construction and basic painting procedures including stage carpentry, theatrical rigging, furniture construction, welding and metal working tools, scumbling and other basic painting techniques, basic sewing, basic electrical wiring, and operating pneumatic tools and shop equipment.
  • Serves as Props Coordinator, overseeing the creation, implementation, acquisition, repairs, and storage of all props needed for production. Collaborates closely with directors, designers and stage managers to fulfill all prop-related responsibilities.
  • Works with Technical Director and Scenic Designer on the evolution, maintenance, cleaning, and safety of scene shop. Supervises removal of trash and recyclable materials in accordance with building policies.
  • Completes assignments related to the general maintenance of the Department of Theatre and Music Studies facilities as determined by the Technical Director or Department Chair.
  • Maintains order records and inventory of all materials and supplies needed for production projects and normal shop operations, in conjunction with Technical Director and Scenic Designer. Performs minor repairs, installations, and modifications of tools and equipment.
  • Attends technical and dress rehearsals to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the show and train student crews on prop handling.
  • Helps coordinate with Design and Technology faculty, staff, the Producer, and the Department Chair to ensure that a faculty or staff member is on duty during each event held in the Tower Fine Arts Theaters.
  • Develops and maintains prop storage and a prop management system.

Non-Essential Functions:
  • Attends and contributes to faculty meetings, production meetings, and other department related events.
  • Participates in ongoing maintenance, cleaning, facility updates, and the organization of storage spaces throughout the building.
  • Serves on campus committees as needed (e.g., Chemical Hygiene Committee, TMS Safety Committee).
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, CAD program software (including AutoCAD and VectorWorks), and the ability to read and draft theatrical technical drawings.
  • Contributes to a positive and collaborative departmental culture that supports shared values, respectful communication, and productive working relationships.


REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in technical theatre by time of appointment from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university
  • Demonstrated three years of experience in theatre or related field
  • Knowledge of chemical hygiene practices and current safety protocols
  • Ability to access and conform to local, state, and federal building safety and fire codes
  • Must be collaborative, detail-oriented, and possess strong organizational, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills to work with faculty, staff, and students
  • Valid New York State driver's license
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous teaching or student supervision/mentorship experience
  • Experience with touring productions and procedures
  • Knowledge of theatrical sound and sound reinforcement
  • Knowledge of theatrical lighting and lighting distribution and control systems
  • Ability to drive a 10'-14' box truck for retrieval of production elements

Physical Demands and Coordination:
  • Ability to work on ladders and climb scaffolding at heights exceeding 15 feet
  • Ability to lift, bend, stoop, walk, reach, stand and work in cramped areas for extended periods of time
  • Ability to frequently lift or carry objects weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring exposure to dust, heights, moving parts, and noise


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Work Schedule:

40 hours/week: Monday - Friday, with hours varying based on department needs, generally 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, with occasional night and weekend hours required.
