About the Department
The Student Engagement and Leadership Center (SELC) at The University of Texas at El Paso serves as the central hub for student involvement, leadership development, and campus traditions. SELC provides programs and services that enhance student experience by fostering personal growth, leadership skills, and community engagement.
The center oversees a wide range of areas, including student organizations, the Miners Leadership Initiative, fraternity and sorority life, engagement opportunities, and campus-wide events. Through these efforts, SELC creates meaningful opportunities for students to connect, explore their interests, and develop skills that prepare them for success beyond the university.
As part of the Division of Student Affairs, the SELC is committed to collaboration, innovation, and student success. The team works closely with campus and community partners to build a vibrant and inclusive campus life that supports UTEP's mission of access and excellence.
Position Information
Hiring Department: Student Engagement and Leadership Center
Posting End Date: Open until filled. This posting may close once a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received.
Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm, flexibility is required on evenings and weekends
FLSA status: Exempt

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. A valid driver's license issued by the State where the applicant resides and insurability as defined in UTS 157 may be required to perform the position's essential functions.
Purpose of Position
The Assistant Director for Leadership and Engagement provides strong educational, social, and leadership development orientated co-curricular programs and activities to enhance student learning at The University of Texas at El Paso. The Assistant Director will oversee and implement engaging programs and activities focused on increasing student life, building leadership capacity, and supporting student success. To be successful, the Assistant Director will need to work collaboratively with the Division of Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and many offices throughout the University.
Essential Functions
University Mission and Culture of Care:
- Work collaboratively with faculty, departments, Colleges/Schools, and administration in developing, leading and assessing programs/activities, high-impact activities, and academic success initiatives for all students.
- Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive, learning outcome based, programming model that contributes greatly to educating students on initiatives consistent with the University's mission and culture of care.
- Lead and/or partner on several major events, activities, and initiatives including but not limited to the International Food Fair, leadership conferences, and annual occurrences.
- Through the development of strategic partnerships with faculty, department, and Colleges/Schools, design innovative programs and deploy initiatives to advance and create campus-wide opportunities for: meaningful dialogue; development of skills in promoting belonging; and development of knowledge about the needs of all students.
Student Engagement:
- Oversees the development and implementation of a comprehensive, learning outcome based, leadership programming model that contributes greatly to student leadership development through department programs such as the Regional Leadership Conference.
- Oversees efforts to ensure communication with the student body is effective, resulting in an increase in participation in overall programming.
- Leads and/or partners on several major events, activities, and initiatives including but not limited to UTEP Edge, Texas Western Gold Rush, Miner palooza, and Miner Welcome.
- Co-advises the Campus Activities Board with the Campus Engagement Coordinator through meetings, providing guidance on managing a budget, conducting performance evaluations, etc.
- Provides oversight, plans, directs, and executes major large-scale campus-wide events, and special projects including but not limited to Miner palooza, leadership conferences, pep rallies, and the Student Leadership Awards.
Department Management:
- Responsible for the recruitment, training, professional development and management of two full-time Coordinators and # of student interns within the Student Engagement and Leadership Center.
- Develops, implements, and conducts a comprehensive department assessment plan that includes but is not limited to evidence of student learning, student and customer satisfaction, monthly Department Dashboards, and Impact Reports.
- Develops and implements a robust marketing plan that encourages and promotes campus engagement reflecting a continuous increase in student participation in programs and initiatives from the Student Engagement and Leadership Center.
- Serves as a member of the Student Engagement Leadership Team and contributes to the broader institutional goals of increasing participation by students in student engagement activities and UTEP Edge high-impact experiences such as student leadership opportunities, internships, and specific programs and initiatives such as UTEP Edge Student Leaders, International Food Fair, and the Regional Leadership Conference.
Coordinates and/or partners on several major events, activities and initiatives including New Student Orientation, Athletic Events, Orange and Blue Days, and Miner Melt.
Participates in various committees, professional trainings, industry conferences, and conventions. Some travel required.
Occasional evenings and weekend work required.
Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software, Adobe, and able to learn and use institutional software systems including
Anthology/Engage and Baseline software.
Complies with all State and University policies.
Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's objectives, policies and applicable laws.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in student development, higher education administration, social sciences, counseling, or related field.
and
Experience: Three years professional, full-time student affairs work experience at a college or university with proven ability to plan strategically, develop innovative programs, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and develop and fiscally manage budgets and resources.
Demonstrated leadership and experience supervising full-time student affairs professional staff as well as graduate and/or undergraduate student staff, advising department student organizations, training staff, and crisis response.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred Experience Master's degree in student development, higher education administration, social sciences, counseling, or related field. Five years professional, full time student affairs experience at a college or university. Demonstrated professional involvement in NASPA, ACPA, or other professional organization. Proven success in programs and events consistent with the University's mission and strategic plan. Experience advising a campus programming board to include budget management, performance evaluations, etc.
