SUMMARY

SUNY Brockport is seeking a dedicated Learning Specialist to support neurodiverse students and students with disabilities in achieving academic success. This position provides one-on-one academic success coaching, case management, and disability-related advising to students with documented learning differences. The Learning Specialist will collaborate with faculty, staff, parents, and external agencies to ensure equal access to college programs, academics, and services. They will oversee the academic coaching program (ACP), supervise the ACP Graduate Assistant, and assist with intake meetings to determine appropriate accommodations. Additionally, they will partner with tutoring services for outreach, present in General Education Program (GEP) classes, and participate in tabling events to promote accessibility services. A key responsibility includes developing and implementing social skills groups for neurodivergent students to enhance peer engagement and college success.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with students with disabilities, particularly those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and be knowledgeable about executive functioning strategies and academic coaching techniques. Strong communication, organizational, and collaboration skills are essential for success in this role. This position plays a vital role in ensuring equitable access and fostering an inclusive learning environment for students at SUNY Brockport.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential Functions:

  • Oversees and enhances the academic coaching program to support student success which includes providing professional one-on-one academic success coaching to students with disabilities, focusing on executive functioning, study skills, time management, and self-advocacy. (40%)
  • Performs student interactive meeting(s) and disability interview appointment(s) to determine requested disability services and accommodations. (20%)
  • Develops and implements social skills groups for neurodivergent students to foster peer engagement and college success. (15%)
  • Provides neurodiverse training and workshops on topics related to neurodiversity for faculty, staff, and students. (10%)
  • Supervises the Graduate Assistant with the Academic Coaching Program to work with students on developing and refining executive functioning skills. (5%)
Non-Essential Functions:
  • Researches academic coaching and executive functioning support for students with disabilities. (5%)
  • Assists SAS team with other departmental functions. (5%)


REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, Higher Education or a related field by time of appointment from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university.
  • Minimum of one year of working experience in Education, Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, Higher Education or a related field
  • Experience providing executive functioning or academic coaching, disabilities services, or related experience with Autism Spectrum Disorders, preferably in a college or university setting
  • Experience working with students with disabilities
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Work Schedule:

37.5 hours/week: Monday-Friday, 8 am-4 pm.
