Residential Education Specialist 4 (Senior Assistant Director)

The Pennsylvania State University houses over 19,000 students on 11 residential campuses. The Senior Assistant Director position works with the Senior Director to provide oversight and coordination for special living options, as well as residential curriculum, engaged learning, diversity and inclusion, and strategic planning initiatives at the University Park campus. This position also serves as a resource to the Commonwealth Campuses (CWCs) in developing these initiatives, and will be Residence Life's liaison to the Student Affairs advocacy office, along with the Office of Student Affairs Research and Assessment. The Senior Assistant Director serves as part of the central leadership team that develops co-curricular programs, policies, and protocols for Residence Life. The Residence Life program at Penn State offers a diverse and dynamic student-centered experiences that focuses on academic and engaged learning opportunities for resident students.

Specifically, this position will:
  • In coordination with Senior Director and Senior Associate Director for University Park, provide strategic direction and oversight for the day-to-day management of all living learning environments at the University Park campus
  • Supervise academic initiative coordinators responsible for the living learning environments at the University Park campus
  • Provide training, development, coordination, and support to University Park residence life staff on the development and assessment of the residential curriculum programs, initiatives, and learning outcomes
  • Collaborate with the Senior Associate Director for CWCs and the Assistant Director for CWCs to support CWC Residence Life staff with residential curriculum program development, diversity/inclusion, engaged learning initiatives, and strategic planning
  • Coordinate departmental strategic plan efforts and chair the strategic planning committee
  • Serve as Residence Life's liaison to the Office for Student Affairs Research and Assessment (SARA), and coordinate planning and assessment efforts with SARA for Residence Life and Housing and Food Services as needed
  • Assist in the dissemination of assessment data and findings to internal and external constituents
  • Serve as Residence Life's liaison to other advocacy units, including, but not limited to: the Multicultural Resource Center; Paul Robeson Cultural Center; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Ally Student Resource Center; and Center for Women Students
  • Oversee the educational programming report for Residence Life
  • Attend University Park meetings to represent assessment, engaged learning, and diversity initiatives
  • Advise the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) on the University Park campus
  • Participate in the weekend on-call duty rotation for University Park, as well as after-hours consultation, as needed
  • Accomplish other duties, which will be assigned as needed


Requirements:
  • Typically requires a A Master's degree or higher, plus 3 years of experience
  • Experience with and knowledge of a residential based curriculum is expected
  • Experience in planning diversity programs in a higher education setting and a commitment to collaborating with other offices to offer such initiatives is needed
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to the development and enhancement of a community where diversity, co-curriculum, and sustainability are valued
  • Experience with responding to crisis situations is necessary in order to participate in the on-call duty rotation


Required to be part of an on call duty rotation and live within 15 miles of campus. Employment with the University will require successful completion of background checks in accordance with University policies. This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. Driver's license is required to serve as Advisor and to support student needs. If operating a University vehicle for this position, candidate will be required to successfully complete a motor vehicle records check in addition to standard background checks. Successful candidates must include resume and cover letter for full consideration.
