Residential Education Specialist 1 (LLC Coordinator)

The Residence Life Coordinator for Living Learning Communities (LLC) reports to the Senior Assistant Director of Residence Life, provides oversight, leadership, direction, and management for Living Learning Communities within the Residential areas. This includes providing development, oversight, and assessment of Living Learning Communities.

The coordinator will create a safe, secure, supportive, and inclusive residential community, as well as:
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of co-curricular learning outcomes
  • Develop and implement co-curricular programs for residents; programs will build on curriculum from Residence Life to empower residents to leverage resources for academic success
  • Develop leadership and team building skills
  • Promote overall student health and wellness; foster equitable and inclusive living-learning environments that value difference and diversity
  • Create other activities/programming that result in outcomes that enhance retention and graduation


The coordinator is responsible to participate in 24/7 on-duty coverage in a residence hall area of up to 5,000 students. Responsibilities include:
  • Educate students on residence hall and university policies
  • Serve as a case manager for on-campus conduct cases
  • Assist in resolving student conflicts and room assignments/changes, as needed
  • Work closely with various offices and appropriate campus resources (Housing, Physical Plant, University Police, crisis intervention for students in crisis situations, health services, counseling services, academic departments, etc.) and external partners (parents, the hospital, etc.) to ensure each resident is receiving a high-quality living experience
  • Weekly meetings with the Senior Assistant Director of Residence Life and Residential Academic Initiatives team will be required in order to discuss Living Learning Communities and programmatic support


The coordinator will supervise paraprofessional student staff, including undergraduate program assistants (PA) who will develop and implement co-curricular programs and provide residential support for residents. Supervision will include oversight of PA responsibilities whose duties will include:
  • Develop and implement events and activities
  • Address resident concerns and crisis management in collaboration with Residence Life staff and PA's
  • Coordinate and facilitate weekly PA staff meetings with Residence Life and facilitation of biweekly one-on-one meetings with each PA staff member
  • Conduct mid-semester and final PA evaluations, assist in hiring PA's, and assist in the development and implementation of PA staff orientation and training


Typically requires a Master's degree. A Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, administration and leadership, or related field and one to two years of related professional experience is preferred.

Applicants must demonstrate required skills in effective communication, team collaboration skills; incorporation of equity and social justice principles in work with students and demonstrated throughout professional experience; leadership in program planning development; commitment to residence life policies; commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its forms. Experience working in living and learning communities, residential settings, and diverse communities is preferred. This is a live-in position. This is an 83.3% full-time equivalency (FTE) job. Months off are mid-May to mid-July each year. Full Penn State benefits included.
