Rate: $37,999.50 - $41,379.75 @ .75 FTE


Position Summary:
This position is responsible for coordinating a variety of access services for deaf and hard of hearing students, including: sign language interpreters, CART or TypeWell transcribers, and media captioning services. This position facilitates communication between deaf/hard of hearing and hearing students, faculty, and visitors to the campus by providing sign language interpreting services. Assesses services for quality and timeliness and creates reports regarding services.


Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in deaf studies, deaf education, education, special education, communication, or related field; OR completion of an accredited interpreter training program
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), National Interpreter Certification (NIC); Certificate of Interpretation (CI); Certificate of Transliteration (CT); or CSC certification or National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Level 4 or 5 certification; OR ability to become certified within 18 months of commencing position.
Five years interpreting experience.
Demonstrated experience in a supervisory or lead work position.



Preferred Qualification:
Masters degree in deaf studies, deaf education, education, special education, communication, or closely related field.
Experience in coordination of interpreting, transcription, and/or captioning services.
Experience in creating captioned media in a variety of file formats.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of best practices in media captioning services.
Knowledge of best practices in transcription systems, especially in regard to remote transcription.
Working knowledge of and demonstrated adherence to the RID Code of Ethics and how this code relates to services for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in an educational setting.
Ability to demonstrate organizational skills, problem solving abilities, and exercise professional judgment.
Ability to use varying styles, approaches, skills, and techniques that reflect and understanding and acceptance of the role of culture in a diverse, multicultural workplace.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner.
Ability to work with a high level of productivity and accuracy/attention to detail.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Ability to adapt to and work effectively in a heavily bureaucratic environment which requires regular interaction with a number of levels within the organization.
Working knowledge, or ability to quickly learn, university infrastructure, policies and procedures.

Special Conditions
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
Under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA):
-Position classification defined as exempt are not subject overtime
-Position classifications defined as on exempt *are *subject to overtime
The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the Oregon Revised Statues and is required to comply with the requirements set forth by the Oregon department of Human Services.
