The Correction Education Advisor will be directly supported by the Advising and Corrections Education Managers, with a dotted line to the Advising Director. This advisor will collaborate with various academic and career pathway team members and faculty to provide academic advice; including course placement and registration, throughout the duration of the student's academic career. If the student is released, this advisor will continue to work with the student throughout the duration of the student's academic career at MATC. The Correction Education Advisor will work with our Credit for Prior Learning (CPLE) department to evaluate transfer credits on record and review and approve course waivers for program requirements with the guidance of program faculty.

Provides academic support and guidance throughout the academic year with a minimum of three points of contacts including: pre-advise (first four weeks of the semester), mid-term (weeks 6-9), and priority registration (weeks 9-16) to his/her caseload to ensure students have the best opportunity to achieve their educational goals. Points of contact will be made virtually and in-person. This position will need to travel to the participating Department of Correction (DOC) facilities in order to meet with in-person. The goal is to build transformative relationships with students when interpreting information and providing clarification on procedures and academic requirements of specific programs. Responsible for the academic progression of all students and plays a pivotal role in promoting student success to ensure they reach key benchmarks throughout their academic program.

Supervision will be provided by the Advising and Correction Education Managers, with a dotted line to the Advising Director using established policies and general objectives occasionally referring to the supervisor for policy clarification or interpretation. As a staff member of MATC's Correctional Educational Services team Advising Center, all job-related performances and directives will be evaluated and given by the Corrections Education Manager and Advising Manager who are in consultation with the Pathway Deans.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advise students participating in Wisconsin correctional settings, assess ACT/Accuplacer scores/GPA as appropriate; review transcript and academic program plans; work collaboratively with Correctional Site Coordinators and Manager, Correctional Education to register students in alignment with course availability, program changes that is supportive of student's ability, academic, financial, and career plans while applying an equity of treatment with all student concerns.
  • Advise students on academic decisions and career development, including effects of dropping courses and/or changing programs and referring students to Financial Aid Specialists as appropriate; clarify Academic Plan and other planning documents to students.
  • Assess strengths and weaknesses in students' academic, career, and personal development by identifying factors that enhance or prevent academic progress; examine alternatives based on changing goals, academic progress or personal situation; interpret non-cognitive assessment results to guide students to establish realistic academic and career goals.
  • Counsel suspended correctional education students; and assist them to complete a Monitored Academic Plan (MAP) that includes courses and a corrective action plan.
  • Collaborate with the Retention Coach to develop and facilitate workshops for students on suspension that includes information on academic policies, academic and non-academic resources.
  • Monitor academic progress of students by analyzing program plans, determining eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree, identifying current and potential needs or problem areas such as study skills and tutoring options; guide students to access college resources, including navigating the student portal to attain self-sufficiency in college transactions.
  • Implement a comprehensive model of academic advising for current students; present group workshops and provide individual advising sessions; serve as a resource for Pathway/Program faculty who advise students.
  • Stay current on general Financial Aid processes, procedures and implications that support Financial Aid recipients suspended or unsuspended; refer students to Financial Aid staff as needed.
  • Identify and refer students in need of additional academic resources, career planning, personal or financial counseling, and/or special needs to appropriate Pathway team member(s) (i.e. Pathway Retention Coach) or other college office(s).
  • Remain current and knowledgeable of MATC transfer credit policies, agreements and graduation requirements for Pathway programs.
  • Collaborate with the Pathway team to ensure delivery of accurate information of all college services.
  • Coordinate with both the Corrections Education and Advising Managers for the new student orientation.
  • Must be comfortable and capable to ensure delivery of excellent customer service advising, including face-to-face, telephone, on-line communication, web-conferencing and occasional traveling.
  • Collaborate with the Pathway team to utilize data identifying students who benefit from services and participate in re-enrollment campaigns and strategies.
  • Use appropriate tools and software to generate and maintain applicable, accurate student reports, meeting summaries and tracking notes.
  • Participate in College Advising Center and other workshops; in-service trainings; student service's committees; advisory boards; sub-committees or educational activities as assigned.
  • Assist Advising Center with general student advising as needed and assist the Pathway Team/Retention Coach with retention issues; serve as student group advisor, as needed, with supervisor's approval.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • The General Advisor will receive DOC training and other correctional-based training.


Qualifications
Required Education:
  • Bachelor's degree and two years of related experience* OR
  • Associate's degree and five years of related experience*
Preferred Education:
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution and two years of related experience*
* Related Experience:
  • Experience in higher education advising or a related higher education student services area that interfaces with students and addresses their academic needs.
  • Knowledge of theories and best practices in Academic Advising and retention in higher education.
  • Broad knowledge of higher education academic programs including technical education, general education and student services.
  • Working knowledge of prison reform and/or social justice
  • Experience working with diverse student populations

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience working in Guided Pathways School
  • Experience working with Department of Corrections
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of prison reform and/or social justice
  • Knowledge of academic advising and career development practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of general entry admissions, enrollment, and registration procedures; student support services; offices, and the MATC Student Handbook.

  • Leverage technology to facilitate the management of student caseload and extract, analyze and interpret data, including generating and utilizing reports.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, both written and oral, to provide high-quality support and customer service to students and promote a positive working environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with academic departments, faculty, staff, students, and the local community while projecting an image of high professionalism.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills and the ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff.
  • Strong public speaking skills including the ability to effectively engage in one-on-one meetings and group settings as a part of workshops and structured presentations.
  • Strong interest and knowledge of Guided Pathways.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to abide by the ethical standards and guidelines for academic advising and college as a whole.
  • Ability to meet flexible work schedule requirements that may include multiple locations, evening and weekend hours in accordance with departmental needs.
  • Ability to access and disseminate information using computers and proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Diplomatic skills to create and maintain partnerships with correctional institutions that support correctional education students attending MATC.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs., carry, and push up to 20 lbs. and ability pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to climb stairs and a ladder and maintain balance.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, hear and speak.
  • Sitting/Standing/Walking: 75% of time spent sitting, 20% of time standing, and 5% of time walking.
  • Valid Driver's license to travel to sites
