Job Summary/Purpose:
Develop and manage a recruitment and retention program aimed at increasing the overall enrollment and persistence of Afro-Centric students. Coordinate COCC's Afro-Centric College Preparation Program, a program designed to increase the post-secondary aspirations of area Afro-Centric high school students.

Terms of Employment:
This is a 11-month exempt Grant Funded position at pay level 23 in the Administrative salary schedule.
Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district.
Requires the provision of official transcripts upon hire.
COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.
The College is NOT able to support Visa applications for this position. Applicants must already be eligible to work in the United States to be considered for this position.
Upon hire, must pass criminal and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions:
Student Program Coordinator:
1. In collaboration with Admissions and Records and the Director of Diversity and Inclusion, design and implement a recruitment plan for Afro-Centric students, both within and outside the COCC service district. Participate in College on- and off-campus recruitment activities.
2. Develop and implement a retention plan for Afro-Centric college and high school students, including activities and events focused on academic success, personal skill development, goal attainment, and cultural or social enrichment.
3. Advocate for and provide support to prospective and current Afro-Centric college and high school students with regards to COCC admissions, academics, financial aid, personal and other pertinent issues on all four COCC campuses.
4. Develop, coordinate and implement activities and events that will facilitate participation and cultural awareness across the COCC community and the College's service district.
5. Provide information and, under the guidance of the Director of Diversity and Inclusion, training for the College on the needs, concerns, and cultural backgrounds of Afro-Centric students.
6. Advise or co-advise the Afro-Centric Student Club and/or other Afro-Centric cultural groups if another faculty or staff advisor is not available.

College Prep Coordinator:
1. In collaboration with the Director of Diversity and Inclusion, establish the goals and objectives of the program; recruit and advise students interested in participating in the program; evaluate the program's effectiveness in recruiting and preparing Afro-Centric students for college and implement the appropriate changes.
2. Teach college courses to high school students throughout the school year and develop a high school student summer symposium. Work with Instruction and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion to establish curriculum outcomes and to meet educational goals of the program. Coordinate all symposium logistics for the program, including travel, meals, course registration processes, selection of participants, recognition ceremonies, and related activities.

General Duties:
1. Develop relationships with local Afro-Centric community organizations and, as appropriate, collaborate with them to further the educational goals of students including establishing relationships with local high schools.
2. In conjunction with the Director of Diversity and Inclusion, and appropriate College personnel, write grant proposals and secure funding for program expansion.
3. Perform other essential functions as assigned.
4. Serve on College committees.

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. 1. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues on a college campus.
2. Demonstrated experience recruiting, advising, mentoring, and retaining students from Afro-Centric populations. Knowledge and skills in communicating and working effectively within Afro-Centric communities. Demonstrated understanding of the developmental needs of Afro-Centric students attending college.
3. Experience in planning and implementing social and educational programs for students.
4. Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines, set work priorities, and manage workload.
5. Ability to work independently within the context of a team environment.
6. Ability to present and facilitate trainings related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
7. Excellent communication skills and ability to manage conflicts within and/or between groups. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
8. Under the director of diversity and inclusion, manage budgets and other administrative processes in a timely and professional manner.
9. Ability to interpret College policies and explain rationale behind policies for prospective and current students, ensuring their understanding of expectations and requirements.
10. Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
11. Ability to follow all privacy requirements as part of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
12. The ability to use software programs and database systems which include Microsoft Office Suite, email, website editing, basic desktop publishing, and modern office equipment.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:
Regular office hours are established between 8 am – 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities. Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Student Services, Higher Education, Adult Learning, Human Development, Counseling, Communications or other related field.

Experience: Two years of experience working in higher education or an equivalent field, such as social service, community outreach, or related areas. One year of experience working in a culturally diverse environment, and in Afro-centric communities, specifically.

Experience: Two or more years of experience working in a multicultural environment, in general, and in Afro-Centric communities, specifically.

The Afro-centric Student Program and College Prep Coordinator is a two-year grant funded position. COCC is currently in the grant application process to fund this position and we anticipate confirmation of the availability of funding by July 1, 2021. Grant funding availability may impact our ability to proceed with hiring this position.
