The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based upon a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, education, experience, specialty and training. Position Summary:
Academic Advisor & Retention Specialists at MSU Denver are primarily responsible for advising a caseload of students on degree requirements and providing long term degree planning. Academic Advisor & Retention Specialists help students develop educational goals and define a career path, through use of a variety of advising approaches and tools. The Advisors monitor student progress, making targeted outreach to students to address potential obstacles in retention and graduation. They also participate in University wide and unit-specific advising initiatives.

The Department of Social Work is a rapidly growing academic unit consisting of undergraduate and graduate education and includes the Master of Social Work (MSW) Program, Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) Program, the Office of Field Education, and the Office of Social Work Student Services (OSWSS), Operations & Finance, and multiple externally funded projects. The OSWSS is a team committed to improving access to a high-quality education for a diverse group of fully online and on campus students and provides innovative programming to support over 900 enrolled students and more than 1,200 prospective students each day, over 7 million in funds, 42 full-time faculty/staff, and over 60 part-time faculty.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Academic Advising (55%)
Provide advising services to undergraduate and graduate social work students through:
  • Using an integrated operations approach, the signature model of the OSWSS team, performing advising functions in a variety of ways to include in person, email, phone, video, group advising sessions, and other modalities
  • Conducting advising sessions with social work students, assisting with course selection, and scheduling and registration using advising-based technology
  • Utilizing knowledge of curriculum to help students with long-term degree planning
  • Preparing and maintaining advising documentation in the current CRM system
  • Teaching students about electronic advising and registration tools and how best to utilize them for success (e.g., Degree Progress Reports, Student Hub, Student Success Collaborative suite, etc.)
  • Referring students to appropriate University resources
  • Providing basic information related to career planning, financial literacy, admissions and other applicable information related to student needs
  • Collaborating with OSWSS-FA, Chair, Directors, Field Office, and faculty advisors to support student success


Retention (25%)
  • Monitoring progress and retention of assigned social work students
  • Utilizing advising based systems to track and engage assigned students who are at-risk of not being retained (Early Alert system, faculty communications)
  • Delivering appropriate interventions
  • Participating in retention initiatives
  • Entering data into departmental databases to support enrollment management
  • Engaging in the Department of Social Work Student Support Process when necessary
  • Engaging in student support programming that supports a diverse body of undergraduate and graduate students
Recruitment and Support (10%)
  • Participating in University, College, and Department recruitment events including outreach and involvement with underrepresented groups
  • Participating and representing the Department of Social Work in SOAR and College of Health and Applied Sciences Transfer Orientations, and Registration events
Training and Professional Development (5%)
  • Beginning or continuing building knowledge of advising techniques and approaches
  • Participating in university-wide and unit specific advising professional development opportunities (e.g., Advising retreats, NACADA webinars, conferences, etc.)
  • Remaining up to date on advising systems and trends in developmental advising
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively relate to a diverse, urban population and community

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in either Social Work, Higher Education, College Personnel, Counseling, or a related academic discipline
  • Experience with academic advising software (e.g., Banner, Degree Works, Student Success Collaborative, etc.)
  • At least 2 years of academic advising experience at an accredited postsecondary institution or 2 years of experience mentoring or advising students
  • Demonstrated experience with developmental advising techniques (or equivalent experience) at an accredited institution
  • Experience in recruitment of students or enrollment of students
  • A strong background and awareness of issues relating to BIPOC, LBGTQIA, low-income, first-generation, undocumented, non-traditional, veteran, English-language learner, and differently abled individuals
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
